Oerlikon solutions for hard-facing applications
Hard-facing (or hard-surfacing) is a metalworking process where harder or tougher metal is applied to a base metal. The general purpose of the procedure is to increase the resistance (to wear, to heat, to impact, to corrosion…..) of the base metal. It is also used to restore a worn-down surface of a part. It is widely used in various industrial fields (mining, steel manufacturing, sugar refinery, petrochemical, farming…) in order to extend the service life of components damaged by abrasion, impact, heat, corrosion or combination of these modes.
All common welding processes are used to perform hard-facing operations: MMA welding, TIG welding, MIG/MAG welding with solid wires or flux cored wires, Submerged Arc Welding but also oxy-fuel process, Plasma Transfer Arc Welding (PTWA) and Thermal spraying. The description of equipment necessary for arc welding processes is done in the here above unalloyed steel applications section.
Oerlikon offers a very wide range of consumables (martensitic alloys, austenitic alloys and metal carbides alloys) to be used in hard-facing operations:
- With gas shielding FLUXOFIL 50 and above, CITOFLUX H06, FLUXOFONTE and FLUXOLIT
- Self-shielded FLUXODUR ranges
- SAW flux/wire for hard-facing with : Flux OP 1250, OP 1300, OP 1350 or OP 1450 and Wire OE-S2 or OE-S2Mo
- SAW flux/flux cored wire : Flux OP 122, 121TT or OP F500 with Flux Cored Wire FLUXOCORD
- SAW flux and strip for weld overlay with Flux : AST 100 and above and Strip SUPRASTRIP
- Electroslag flux and strip for weld overlay with Flux : ELT 300 and above and Strip SUPRASTRIP
The choice of the right consumables has to be done in accordance with the category of the base metal, with the mode of wear, with available equipment and with the required deposition rate.

A selection of consumables (Coated Electrodes and Flux Cored Wires) to respond to the repair and maintenance requirements encountered in the mining and quarrying industries.
Oerlikon has developed a specific range of coated electrodes and cored wires.
These consumables associated with the correct equipment guarantee the optimisation of repair and surfacing operations.
As many industries require equipment to work at elevated temperatures, in corrosive media and under high pressure, the use of highly alloyed materials for the fabrication of complete components becomes financially unrealistic as their size increases.
One solution for stainless steels and other highly alloyed materials, such as nickel base alloys, is to deposit a weld overlay on the surface of the equipment to resist corrosion attack. This can be done with the strip weld overlaying method with the Submerged Arc or Electroslag processes.
For many years, the extensive R&D commitment of Oerlikon has continued to contribute to the knowledge of raw materials and experience in flux formulation used in both the submerged arc and electroslag processes.
The complete Oerlikon range of strips and fluxes for the Weld Overlay is described in a specific brochure.
